Hi Jackie,

I really want to thank you for pulling back the veil on what the submissions process looks like from a stats perspective. I’ve never gotten a glimpse like this before and it’s fascinating. I don’t know if 420 subs in a month is a high, medium or low water mark for your team and it would be interesting to see your trend over a longer period of time.

It takes guts to share this kind of information so openly. Again, thanks.

This is great information! Thank you so much for this, it really has me thinking. I recently started a zine, indie comic, and small press publishing blog and have the idea in the back of my head to someday start publishing. After reading this post, I realize I have a lot more to think about/plan before I send anything off to the printers.

That’s probably another blog post, but yeah, Word Riot has started sharing private Google Doc spreadsheets with authors to keep track of sales and royalties.

I guess it comes from my reporter days. I’m a big proponent of information transparency and I’ve found sharing sales data forces me to stay up-to-date on tracking those sales. Pathway, my distributor, makes this really easy for me since they have online inventory and sales reports that are updated daily.

Authors are really eager to know figures on how their books are selling. The more information they know about where their books are selling well, the better they can use that information to help me in promotion efforts.

Jackie is a great publisher. She saved my book *and* she puts all sales information into a shared google document for the author to see.

I love Word Riot. I’m in college now, but I have been reading it since middle school. The website has introduced to me to so many writers and I am now a english major myself. I would keep it the same. I love that simple layout.

just a notion: but perhaps the monthly schedule idea is a holdover from the print world that could be somewhat modified. it’s of course tougher from an edit standpoint in some ways to post stuff as it arrives instead of every 30 days. still, perhaps 2 or 3 times per month, a “WW Special” or some such could appear, just to whet the appetites of readers for the upcoming monthly update. Even single new items appearing twice (even once) monthly and fed into RSS, social media and emails would add a dynamic aspect and serve as good promos and reminders for the big monthly update. (“Here’s a new story by Timmy. Remember to check out WW’s Nov. issue in 2 weeks!”)

Or, as lee klein might say: more porn. just add more porn. (i guess Timmy can get in on that too. He’s multifaceted.)
